Mario Civelli is the owner and founder of El Gauchito. He was born in Mendoza, Argentine, “the province of sun and good wine.” Located at the foot of the Andes, Mendoza has the perfect combination of weather along with the hard work of the people which results in the best Argentinian wines.

In 1969, Mario immigrated to New York where he settled with the dream of success. After some temporary jobs as a dishwasher, he started working in butcher shops where he learned the trade. In 1976, with the help of his friend Martinez, Mario opened his first butcher shop in the suburbs of Queens. This was followed by the marriage to his wife Graciela and their three children: Marcello, Giovanni and Vanessa.

After the birth of Marcello in 1979, Mario opened “Carnicería Argentina El Gauchito” which offered Argentinian-style steaks and homemade sausages. The business quickly progressed due to the top-quality meat, cold cuts and focus on customer service. By 1987, with the success of the butcher shop, Mario opened the restaurant “El Gauchito,” as it stands today, with the butcher shop providing fresh meats directly to the restaurant.

Helping his father at an early age, Marcello was involved in managing the restaurant and the butcher shop. Together they continued providing the best service and quality to their patrons, while incorporating a variety of Argentinian products and offering an extensive menu with over 60 dishes. In 2011, the restaurant moved a step closer with the development of an additional dining room, providing a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere.

Today El Gauchito is not only the oldest and most comprehensive Argentinian butcher shop in Queens, it is also a restaurant that offers authentic Argentinian food that can be enjoyed with family and friends in their two dining rooms, the traditional one and modern one.

*Empanadas and parrilla are the way to go! But make sure to visit their butcher shop next door!*
