Applied verbal behavior analysis is a verbal behavior program which focuses on natural environment teaching in a one-to-one setting, then in a small group before transferring skills into a large group social setting.
Perri K. Palermo is the director of Applied Behavior Therapy for Life and Speech for Life Therapy Center. Palermo graduated from Wayne State University with a master’s degree in communication disorders in 1999. She has been practicing speech and language pathology with all age groups and in a variety of settings, including school based acute care/hospital-based care, skilled nursing rehabilitation, autism therapy, home health, early childhood intervention and private practice.
Applied verbal behavior teaches and reinforces functional, “real use” language skills along with other social skills. The focus is to teach a child to realize that language is useful and meaningful and that the child can control his/her environment by using language. Applied verbal behavior uses errorless strategies for learning so the child practices only the correct behavior. It takes the newly-learned language skills and teaches the child to use them in his or her everyday life.
Palermo has vast experience with autism spectrum disorders and has a strong interest in providing speech/language intervention to the autism spectrum population, as her own child is living with autism. She is licensed to practice in Texas and has a Certificate of Clinical Competence. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Texas Speech-Language Hearing Association and the Houston Association for Communication Disorders.
Palermo realizes that having a fully integrated type of clinical program which includes applied verbal behavior analysis with strong speech/language learning techniques is the “link” to generalize and connect the social and functional aspects of verbal communication and make it useful in real life and in a child’s natural environment. This natural environment is where children's independence, peer relationships, play skills, confidence and self-esteem are formed.
